Facts About Malcolm X - Was Egypt Coming to America?

A fact about Malcolm X and his story concerns Egypt and the Nation of Islam. In 1961, black America was marching and chanting against a segregated government similar to the recent protest that is happening in Egypt.

Black Americans were fed up with an unjust and unequal government that limited and segregated them from the rest of its citizens.

However, in 1961 the Nation of Islam unveiled an architectural drawing of a hospital, museum, worship center and library proposed to be built in their newspaper "Muhammad Speaks."

Malcolm X states in his autobiography that this University and Hospital was going to fashioned after the University of Cairo in Egypt. But, most blacks in America didn't even know that the University of Cairo in Egypt existed.

Blacks also didn't know that the University of Cairo is one of the oldest and finest universities in the world. It is especially renowned for its Medical and Surgical center around the world. And the University of Cairo also produces one of the finest medical schools in the world.

If this center was going to be fashioned after The University of Cairo were Egyptians going to build it?

Was Mr. Muhammad bringing Egypt to America?

Is it possible that this was a direct attempt by Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Nation of Islam to combat the inferior image that segregated America had made of Africa and African people?

An Egyptian hospital would have changed the image of Africa in the minds of many Americans, especially, African Americans who at that time were ashamed of their African heritage.

The timeless city of Cairo, Egypt and its Renown University of Cairo would have been a huge factor in making black people proud of their African descent.

However, this center was never built because of a mistake Malcolm X made concerning the murder of President Kennedy in 1963. Malcolm X's "chickens coming home to roost" comments sent a tremor through the Islamic world and created a division between himself and his leader, Elijah Muhammad that would never be resolved.

This one fact about Malcolm X kept Egypt from coming to America.

Derek Lavelle once a promising boxer learned the Nation of Islam story while in a boxing camp named after Muhammad Ali called M.A.P.S (Muhammad Ali Professional Sports). At MAPS in 1981 Derek met older, original Nation of Islam men that had remained loyal to Elijah Muhammad during Malcolm's exodus. Another Fact About Malcolm X

Did you know another fact about Malcolm X is that he once tried to trick a known killer out of his money? Yes, in his autobiography he told Alex Haley this fact about a numbers runner that had a photographic memory whose name was West Indian Archie.

West Indian Archie's memory was well known for never having to write a number down which was a valuable asset in the numbers business because the police could never catch him with number slips. He would memorize numbers customers gave him in any combination and then record them later that night.

For over twenty years he never missed a customer's number until one day Malcolm X then known as Detroit Red claimed that he had hit a number and accused him of forgetting he played it.

West Indian Archie went on and paid Malcolm his money but checked his betting slips later and realized that Malcolm had made a false claim.

This was a dangerous play. West Indian Archie's reputation was on the line because he knew that young hustlers often tried to trick older hustlers out of their money and at the same time build a reputation of their own in the process.

West Indian Archie put a gun in Malcolm's face and demanded his money back within four hours. This was a death threat that Malcolm either had to confront or leave town.

Malcolm X decided to leave town.

But Malcolm returned years later after he had spent 7 years in prison and had became a minister for the Nation of Islam. He returned and found West Indian Archie living far below the level he was when Malcolm had left.

He was now living in a boarding home, broke and very sick. Malcolm says he was too hurt to stay much longer because he couldn't stand to see Archie living that way after knowing him in his best days.

But, another fact that Malcolm X failed to tell in his autobiography is that West Indian Archie was broke because of Malcolm X beat him.

After Malcolm claimed Archie was losing his memory and forgetting his numbers many others followed making false claims until his memory could not be trusted anymore by his financial backers.

This led to West Indian's downfall.

This was devastating to West Indian Archie because his reputation for having a photographic memory was his claim to fame in the numbers racket.

This is another fact about Malcolm X that is very important because later, Malcolm X would also attempt to destroy the reputation of his renowned leader "The Honorable Elijah Muhammad."

But unlike the situation with West Indian Archie, Malcolm X would not escape death and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad would continue to flourish and in fact become even more renown after Malcolm X's untimely death.

Malcolm X one of America's greatest civil rights leaders made many mistakes. A new book titled "The Many Mistakes of Malcolm X" written by Derek Lavelle reveals mistakes Malcolm X made beginning with his dropping out of school to his own actions that created his assassination. The Mistakes Malcolm X Made Concerning Women

Malcolm X made many mistakes concerning women. In his famous autobiography Malcolm X tells us the story of his life but upon further examination all the women in his life end up on the short end of the stick.

Malcolm X and Laura

Laura was the young girl who befriends Malcolm X when he was a young man of 14 years old and working as a soda fountain clerk. Laura later becomes a drug addict and a prostitute. Malcolm admits his role in her demise and even tells Alex Haley that he wrecked her life. Laura incidentally was the only women to have a chapter named after her.

Malcolm X and Sophia

Sophia was the white girl that Malcolm chose over Laura at a dance. She was a white girl that obvious had jungle fever and became a main stay in his young hustler life. Malcolm later convinces her and her sister to become accomplices in his robbery scheme. Later, after holding out on a piece of jewelry and gets caught with a gun, Malcolm turns states evidence against them and they both were given time in the women's reformatory.

Malcolm X and Ella

Ella was Malcolm' X s older half sister that moved him from foster care to Boston to live with her. She was Malcolm's guardian and loved him dearly. Ella was his closest ally during his life. When he went to prison it was Ella that worked feverishly to move him from maximum to minimum security. But, when Malcolm left the Nation of Islam and made his trip to Mecca, Ella a orthodox Muslim, had been saving her own money for the trip to Mecca and the Hajj for herself. Malcolm convinced her to loan him her savings so he could go instead, Ella agreed and Malcolm admits to Alex Haley before he died that he never paid her back. Even after he had received several book advances from his autobiography.

Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz

Malcolm X's wife Betty Shabazz bore him six daughters. She was a perfect Muslim wife and mother, dedicated to her husband and his cause. However, when Malcolm split from the Nation of Islam, Malcolm states that the only argument she ever gave him was his inability to save money. She knew that once the split was final Malcolm X would be cut off from the Nation's payroll and even their home would be taken from them since it belonged to Nation of Islam. Malcolm didn't listen. But even worst, when Malcolm X was assassinated, Betty Shabazz was left with no money to bury her husband. Even though he was under death threats and predicted that he would never live to see his autobiography finished, Malcolm X never bought life insurance for his wife and children.

There are other women that received minor attention in Malcolm' X s autobiography such as a prostitute that belong to his pimp friend Sammy. She was slapped out of anger by Malcolm because of an ill-advised and failed robbery attempt that Malcolm planned but got Sammy shot. Finally, Elijah Muhammad's mistress's who were used by Malcolm X to file paternity charges against Elijah Muhammad so that he could slander Mr. Muhammad and build his own organizations. Alex Haley writes that Malcolm X took the women to the attorney to file these charges against Elijah Muhammad and it was Malcolm X that did the talking on behalf of the women. These mistakes Malcolm X made concerning women are all taken from his own words in his autobiography and they paint a very dismal picture of our beloved yet controversial leader.

Two Facts About Malcolm X You Didn't Know

There are two facts about Malcolm X that you didn't know and it is disturbing to learn these facts.

The First Fact about Malcolm X

The Addiction and Prostitution of Laura

Laura was a young girl that befriended Malcolm when he first arrived in Boston to live with his sister Ella. She was a nice girl in high school that wanted to go on to college and study science or medicine.

She was an A student and was the only one that tried to talk Malcolm into going back to school after he told her he always wanted to become a lawyer.

Laura met Malcolm when he was working as a soda fountain clerk at the Townsend Drug Store that was located right across from where Laura lived with her grandmother.

Laura and Malcolm went to a dance one night and it was there that Malcolm met Sophia, a white girl that became Malcolm's women and his accomplish in his robbery scheme later in life.

Laura, heartbroken over being jilted for another woman never came back to the drugstore again while in school.

But years later Laura runs into Malcolm again but this time Malcolm is a cold bloodied hustler that has a pimp friend named Sammy.

Malcolm and Sammy use a technique on Laura that Sammy has perfected that turns innocent girls into prostitution.

In the autobiography of Malcolm X he gives a graphic picture of what Laura becomes after they turn her out.

"Laura is in and out of Jail because of drugs sells herself to men to support her habit. Then hating the men that uses her she becomes a Lesbian. I blame myself for this and to have jilted her for a white woman makes this a double crime.

The second and most disturbing Fact about Malcolm X

After Malcolm becomes a minister for the Nation of Islam he never locates Laura and helps her through the Nations of Islam's drug rehab program that was fast becoming nationally recognized as the best.

The Nation of Islam also was building a college specifically for people that specialize in science. Since Malcolm knew Laura wanted to go to college and study science it seems fair that Laura would be perfect for the Nation of Islam's college program.

Yet not one time does Malcolm X ever mention trying to find and rescue Laura in his autobiography.

He does go out of his way to try to find two former hustlers that once tried to kill him, Sammy who later in the story tried to kill Malcolm over another woman was already dead before Malcolm was paroled and West Indian Archie who threatened to kill him over money was sick and living in a boarding house.

But no recorded attempt was ever made to rescue poor Laura the only person Alex Haley named a chapter after.

These are just two facts about Malcolm X that are hidden in history but they give good explanations how good kids like Laura with bright futures can go bad, even today.

Malcolm X Bio Vs Malcolm X Movie

Malcolm X's biography is different from Malcolm X's movie. These differences lead to truth vs. fiction.

The truth is more people today have seen the movie rather than read the book and this has left too many people not really knowing the content that Malcolm wrote.

The content of Malcolm X's book is so awesome that the movie cannot capture every moment. Time magazine called Malcolm X's biography one of the most important books of the twentieth century.

Spike Lee does an excellent job of portraying Malcolm X's life in film.

And Denzel Washington is superb as Malcolm X in the leading role.

However, in Malcolm X's biography explanations are made how the Nation of Islam was able to remove people from drugs permanently that could be implemented even today.

How the Nation of Islam grew into a powerful organization and built temples in every city is only scantly mentioned in the movie while Malcolm X explains in greater detail in his biography.

Also, Malcolm X' s mistakes such as dropping out of school, going to prison and his bout with drugs are real and in living color in his autobiography.

The ability to read and re-read how the Nation of Islam inspired men and women to study and become educated and stop pimping and prostituting is too valuable to miss.

Other questions that can be answered such as how Laura a girl Malcolm meets and befriends becomes a prostitute is also available in his autobiography that the movie doesn't show.

Finally, the facts that lead to why Malcolm X really died cannot be covered totally in the span of Spike Lee's movie, however if someone really wants to know the truth about his death and can dig deep into the biography the truth can be found.

This makes the Malcolm bio so much more valuable than the Malcolm X movie because you can read it and re-read it to really appreciate Malcolm X and his life.

Malcolm X - The Movie

After watching Malcolm X my perspective of the man was changed. What I thought of him and what the media portrayed him as is so different from the man he became before he died. Many of us, when we think of Malcolm X think of a man who supported black supremacy and stirred hatred of the white man. The media however has failed to tell the end of his story, the part of his story where his prejudice was replaced with an embrace of brotherhood for all mankind. So I think it is important to know his whole story - the beginning, middle and end - to learn from the source of his mistakes as well as the mistakes of the society he fought so hard to change. To illustrate his journey I will attempt to walk you through the events of his life and offer a perspective that may change the way you perceive Malcolm X.

"We are each burdened with prejudice; against the poor or the rich, the smart or the slow, the gaunt or the obese. It is natural to develop prejudices. It is noble to rise above them." (Author Unknown)

On May 10, 1925 in Omaha Nebraska a child is born. No one could know the gravity this child would impact upon society. Number seven out of eight children born as Malcolm Little to mother Louise Little and self-reliant father Earl Little; Malcolm would grow up to become Malcolm X, leader of the 1960s black power movement. Early in his life Malcolm learns racism and prejudice from his environment as his childhood is marked by the violent death of his father by the hands of the Ku Klux Klan. The result is a disintegrated family; and Malcolm lands in a juvenile home. Malcolm then grows up to live out the prevailing society-force-fed prejudicious stereotype of the white man, becoming a street hustler in Harlem who covets the opportunities of the racist white man. Still at this stage of his life no one knows the gravity of his existence, at least not until he converts to the Nation of Islam where he finds an "enlightened" structure for him to focus his disdain of the source of prejudice pervading his life; the white man. However, we learn in the documentary film, Malcolm X, that it is not his focused disdain, or racism he embraced as a member of the Nation of Islam that we should remember him for; but rather his eventual personal triumph over racism, a fact that many of us are ignorant of.

His father, a reverend, attracted persecution from the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) early in Malcolm's childhood because of his firm teachings of self-reliance to his congregation. Several attempts to scare Malcolm's father were made, but to no avail. Eventually his father's defiance led to his brutal and violent death at the hands of the KKK. I would suppose that an event as horrific as this would scar Malcolm as a child and permanently imprint upon his mind the futility of standing against racism.

The resulting effect of his father's death places Malcolm in a juvenile home. During this time Malcolm excels in grade school, becoming the top of his class. It seems he wishes to defy the futile message of his father's murderer's. Malcolm tells his teacher that his goal is to become a lawyer. But here, in a place where education should be above prejudice, Malcolm is told he cannot aspire to the lofty ambitions of being a lawyer; that he should be a carpenter because being a lawyer is not a realistic goal for a "nigger". Perhaps this is a marked point for change in Malcolm's goals and ambitions.

An older Malcolm acquires various jobs shoe shining, dishwashing, and soda jerking. Soon after he is exposed to the criminal world and finds himself on the streets of Harlem living the tireless life of a hustler. Always moving, always preying on victims, Malcolm dangerously lives on the edge of becoming a statistic. Drugs, larceny and carousing with women is all done at the expense of the white man. The white woman in fact is a conquest to him, another indication of his ironic coveting and resentment of the white man. Crippled by his childhood trauma Malcolm is still yet unable to filter information in a productive way. Everything he does is a stubborn cry out to the world, to the white man, to himself.

His crimes eventually lead him to jail. This is where the culmination of his experiences mark his turn to becoming a black power leader. This is where he becomes the person that history portrays him. But this person is just another version of the same Malcolm in Harlem. His resentment for the white man is the same. All that changes is the way he expresses it.

The Nation of Islam invites Malcolm in with spiritual enlightenments and structure. Their teachings of separation or segregation are very attractive to Malcolm. The trauma from Malcolm's past is perhaps the fuel for his unquestionable devotion to this ideology. As humans we need structure to base our reality and give shape to it and give us direction. The Nation of Islam seems to be the perfect ideological structure to shape Malcolm's broken psyche. They preach a little bit of truth, but he is unaware of the cancerous manipulative nature of his childhood trauma - using his resentment towards the white man. Sure he stopped carousing with women, stopped doing drugs and living the life of a criminal. But that little bit of truth just made it easier for Malcolm to retain his resentment and devote himself to their teachings, especially the teachings of separation that he fervently proclaimed. It appears that Malcolm is confusing this teaching with what he truly needed to confront, his own prejudice.

How many of us confuse truth because of repressed trauma? Why do things seem so attractive to us and stir such emotional devotion despite their obvious negative nature? The false therapy of shouting these so-called truths that have manipulated us are just a cry to heal our broken hearts or souls. Malcolm is unaware of this manipulation until his own people; The Nation of Islam, the focus of his existence and devotion ostracize him. Then he realizes the error of his thinking.

In March 1964, Malcolm X leaves the Nation of Islam and makes is hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca. Here he sheds his controversial name for a new name, El Hajj Malik El Shabazz. From this point should be the Malcolm we remember, not the broken and manipulated Malcolm that is presented by the media that feeds the common perception in society. His hajj is where he changes his perspective on whites and racism completely. Here is an excerpt of a letter El Hajj Malik El Shabazz wrote about his Hajj experience. Readers of this letter can learn as Malcolm X did, that we are all burdened with prejudice, and that it is noble to build bridges of cooperation instead of walls of segregation.

"During the past eleven days here in the Muslim world, I have eaten from the same plate, drunk from the same glass and slept in the same bed (or on the same rug)-while praying to the same God with fellow Muslims, whose eyes were the bluest of the blue, whose hair was the blondest of blond, and whose skin was the whitest of white. And in the words and in the actions and in the deeds of the 'white' Muslims, I felt the same sincerity that I felt among the black African Muslims of Nigeria, Sudan and Ghana. We are truly all the same-brothers. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds." (El Hajj Malik El Shabazz-1964)
